We totally overhauled our company pages to tell a better story of what we do and why we’re doing it. It’s a funny thing, because it was a classic “cobbler’s children” situation where the whole team was so focused on the product that we didn’t give the company pages their proper due even though that’s where anyone who wants to come work here or just wants to learn more about who we are goes. We’ve remedied that now and I’m super happy with it.

For a year now, Apple has been chugging along on intertia and their war chest full of past profits, but will that be enough to last? Yesterday’s iPhone 5 announcement was a sign of the weakening resolve in the post-Jobs iPhone team. The iPhone 5 ships with 21 home screen icons.

— It’s a sad day: The icon ceiling has been broken.

The iPhone “Icon Ceiling” has been broken: is this the beginning of the end? — justin hileman dot info

Google Maps: Designing the Modern Atlas - Core77 »

This whole Core77 article about the design of Google Maps is pretty excellent. It’s a great breakdown of the insane challenges of building a map of the world. Beyond everything else, though, I found this especially shocking: “In recent months we have introduced a few more regional changes to our color palette adding 3D building shadows to indicate local time-of-day.” 3D building shadows … Who knew?

Turns out Saul Bass made a children’s book and it’s just been reprinted. Looks amazing. Just bought a copy.

A Hewlett Packard spokesperson confirmed (on December 15) that “in 2008, HP asked marketing agency Moving Brands to propose new ideas for various elements of HP’s brand identity, including fonts, graphics, and logos.” But now, “HP is one of the world’s most valuable brands and has no plans to adopt the new logo proposed by Moving Brands. HP did implement some of the other design elements shown in the case study.

That crazy HP logo from a few months ago isn’t actually replacing the old logo.
